U. of Chicago Nabs $75 Million for Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Pritzker Foundation

$75 million to the University of Chicago to endow and name the new Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. The foundation has previously given $25 million for molecular-engineering studies at the university.

Premera Blue Cross, Providence St. Joseph Health, and Swedish Health Services

$15 million to Plymouth Housing to create permanent housing for chronically homeless people in Seattle. The three health companies each pledged $5 million.

Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust

$10 million to Creighton University to help build a new health-sciences building in Phoenix.

Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

$4.7 million to the University of California at San Diego to improve surgical outcomes and develop new personalized treatments for patients with Crohn’s disease.


Toyota Mobility Foundation

$2 million to Babson College to support entrepreneurship programs and develop new ideas to support economic mobility.

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

$1.7 million to PBS NewsHour to expand Canvas, its broadcast and digital-arts reporting program.

Mastercard Impact Fund

$1.5 million to the Urban Institute to provide data-analysis tools for city and community leaders that will offer insights and evaluations of how technology can improve quality of life in their areas.

Walmart Foundation

$1 million to Hire Heroes USA to expand its employment services for military veterans and their spouses, and improve its programs’ data collection and reporting.

New Grant Opportunity

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is offering $1.25 million in cash prizes through MIT Solve, its annual grant-making competition for tech entrepreneurs who are working to address the world’s most pressing problems. This year, grants worth between $10,000 and $100,000 each will be awarded in the areas of circular economy, community-driven innovation, early-childhood development, and healthy cities. Proposals are due July 1.
