The Simons Foundation has made a five-year, $40-million pledge to the University of Hawaii to boost the school’s oceanographic studies, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
University researchers will lead the Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology, a project to advance knowledge of the microscopic organisms in seawater and how they operate to sustain oceanic ecosystems. The first grant installment, of $8-million, will be paid July 1.
The Simons Foundation is headed by the mathematician and hedge-fund billionaire James Simons, who received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy last year for his giving to promote math and science research.
