U. of Southern California Gets $17-Million Gift; Other Recent Donations

The University of Southern California, in Los Angeles, has received $17-million from Katherine B. Loker, an alumna whose father founded Starkist Foods, for the Hydrocarbon Research Institute and for a new track-and-field stadium.
Mrs. Loker designated $15-million for research at the institute, which works to spur advances in such areas as energy, industrial chemistry, and pharmaceuticals, and $2-million for the stadium’s construction.
Other recent gifts:
Auburn U. (Ala.): $3,000,000 from Al Smith, Jr., of Houston, retired chief executive officer of the energy company PSE, and his wife, Jule, to construct a fine-arts museum.
Augustana College (Ill.): $1,390,000 bequest from the estate of Helen Sudbrook of Davenport, Iowa, a retired bookkeeper, for scholarships.
Baker U. (Kan.): $1,200,000 from James Ferrell of Liberty, Mo., chairman of Ferrell Companies and of Ferrellgas, and his wife, Elizabeth, corporate secretary of Ferrell Companies, for unrestricted use.
Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina: $2,000,000 bequest from the estate of Clyde Hayes of Wilkesboro, N.C., a lawyer, for unrestricted use.
Bethany College (W.Va.): Charitable remainder trust valued at $4,000,000 from Gene C. Valentine of Thousand Oaks, Cal., co-chairman of Financial West Investment Group, for the capital campaign.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania: $2,500,000 from an anonymous donor for the capital campaign.
Deborah Hospital Foundation (N.J.): Charitable remainder unitrust valued at $5,000,000 from William Matern of Newfoundland, Pa., and his wife, Mickey, for unrestricted use. The foundation raises funds for the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, in Browns Mills, N.J.
Drew U. (N.J.): $1,000,000 bequest from the estate of Antoinette Bentley of Far Hills, N.J., a lawyer and retired senior vice-president of Crum and Forster, for scholarships for women in the College of Liberal Arts.
Gonzaga U. (Wash.): $1,000,000 from Kay Barbieri of Spokane, Wash., and her late husband, Lou, co-founder of the Goodale & Barbieri Companies, for the campaign to build a new law school.
Harvard U. (Mass.): $2,900,000 bequest from the estate of Katherine C. Gammon of Chattanooga, Tenn., whose late husband, Landon, was a lawyer, for scholarships for foreign students in the Master of Laws program in the law school.
Huntingdon College (Ala.): $1,000,000 from Leon Edward Ligon III of Montgomery, Ala., a retired executive at IBM, and his wife, Myra, to renovate Flowers Hall and its chapel.
Lake Forest College (Ill.): $1,000,000 from an anonymous couple to endow a teaching and learning center.
The Library Foundation (Ore.): $2,200,000 bequest from the estate of Helen Kroll of Portland, Ore., a retired legal secretary, for endowment. The Library Foundation raises funds for the Multnomah County Library system. Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (S.C.): $7,622,737 from an anonymous donor for unrestricted use.
Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: $1,400,000 bequest from the estate of Jeannette Snyder of Catonsville, Md., to renovate a kennel and for endowment.
Meharry Medical College (Tenn.): $1,158,187 bequest from the estate of Lewis Orlo Williams of Springvale, Me., a lawyer, for unrestricted use. Mr. Williams died in 1990; the bequest came upon the death of his wife, Frances, in December.
Oregon State U.: $1,158,187 bequest from the estate of Lewis Orlo Williams of Springvale, Me., a lawyer, for unrestricted use at the Linus Pauling Institute. Peace College (N.C.): $1,500,000 from an anonymous donor to construct a new academic building.
Randolph-Macon College (Va.): $1,000,000 from M. William Armistead of Moneta, Va., retired president of Landmark Communications, and his wife, Polly, to renovate the Old Chapel academic building.
The Sage Colleges (N.Y.): $1,680,000 bequest from the estate of Laura Auer of Schenectady, N.Y., a former physical-education instructor at Russell Sage College, for unrestricted use.
Saint Raphael Academy (R.I.): Charitable remainder trust valued at $1,600,000 from James MacDougald of Colorado Springs, retired chairman of AMI Industries, which manufactures aircraft seats, and from his wife, Michaele; $1,000,000 from William F. Farley of Chicago, chairman of Fruit of the Loom; and $1,000,000 from Charles E. Walker, Jr., of Marietta, Ga., chairman of ChemLink, a dental-equipment manufacturer, and his wife, Donna. All three gifts are for the capital campaign.
Southwest Texas State U.: $1,000,000 from William P. Hobby of Houston, former Lieutenant Governor of Texas, to endow the Center for Public Service.
Springvale Public Library (Me.): $3,400,000 bequest from the estate of Lewis Orlo Williams of Springvale, a lawyer, for expansion and for unrestricted use.
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Ga.): $1,000,000 from Carl Bouckaert of Dalton, Ga., president and chief executive officer of Beaulieu of America, a carpet manufacturer, for a new church and to expand services to accommodate an influx of Hispanic parishoners.
Sweetser Children’s Services (Me.): $1,158,187 bequest from the estate of Lewis Orlo Williams of Springvale, Me., a lawyer, for unrestricted use.
Trinity College (Conn.): $2,000,000 from Rodney Day III of Bryn Mawr, Pa., a director of Marsh & McLennan Companies, and his wife, Evelyn, to provide capital for neighborhood-renewal projects in areas adjoining the college.
U. of Delaware: $1,000,000 from Fred P. Rullo, Jr., of Bryn Mawr, Pa., former chairman of Freedom Chemical, to construct a new stadium.
U. of Idaho: $1,500,000 bequest from the estates of William Folz of Moscow, Idaho, retired chairman of the university’s department of agricultural economics, and his wife, Carolyn, retired law librarian at the university, for scholarships.
U. of Massachusetts at Boston: $1,000,000 from Pamela Trefler of Boston, a former investment banker, to establish a collaboration with Dorchester High School, in Boston.
U. of Minnesota-Twin Cities: $1,000,000 from Sage Cowles of Minneapolis, and her husband, John, chairman of Cowles Media, to construct a softball stadium.
U. of Texas at Austin: $2,000,000 from Joe Jamail of Houston, a lawyer, and his wife, Lee, for scholarships for minority undergraduate students and for minority students at the school of law.
Warren Wilson College (N.C.): $2,000,000 from Rob Pew of Fletcher, N.C., former president of operations at the office-furniture manufacturer Steelcase, to renovate and expand the library.
Western Kentucky U.: $1,000,000 from an anonymous donor to endow the Gifted Studies Program and for scholarships.
Westminster School (Conn.): $1,000,000 from Bernhard L. Kohn, Jr., of Bloomfield, Conn., vice-president of investments at Advest Inc., and his family, for undetermined use.
Winthrop U. (S.C.): $1,000,000 from Harry Dalton of Rock Hill, S.C., retired chief executive officer of Star Paper Tube, and his wife, Becca, to endow a professorship in environmental sciences.
Xavier U. (Ohio): $1,000,000 from William J. Williams of Cincinnati, chairman of Western-Southern Life, and his family, for the College of Business Administration.
