The University of California at Los Angeles said Tuesday that it is terminating an agreement that would have brought the institution $3-million in research funds from the Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation, the Los Angeles Times writes.
The move came shortly after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced league sanctions against Mr. Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, for his racist comments in an audiotape that surfaced last week. The foundation made the seven-year pledge in March to support kidney research and had contributed $425,000 so far, which the university said it will return.
“Mr. Sterling’s divisive and hurtful comments demonstrate that he does not share UCLA’s core values as a public university that fosters diversity, inclusion, and respect,” university spokeswoman Carol Stogsdill.
