UK Charity Regulator Warns of Overlap Among Charities

June 27, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The outgoing chief executive of the Charity Commission, which regulates charities in England and Wales, says that there are too many groups trying to do the same work, The Independent reports.

Sam Younger, who steps down from his position this month, also warned that cuts to the regulatory body’s budget threaten its sustainability.

In 2013–14, the Charity Commission received 6,661 applications for new charities in England and Wales, a 16 percent increase over the previous year. Some of those efforts might be better served within, or through collaborations with, existing groups, Mr. Younger says.

One area in which he cited significant duplication was charities related to armed forces and veterans services.
