A former engineering student at Imperial College London has given the institution about $67-million to establish a center for biomedical research, U.K. news service the Press Association reports.
Donor Michael Uren said he hoped the center would help spur a new “Silicon Valley” in London. The facility at the college’s west London campus will house research aimed at developing affordable medical technology to treat a range of illnesses.
The research hub will be named for Mr. Uren, who earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Imperial College in 1943 and went on to found Civil and Marine Ltd., a cement-manufacturing firm he sold in 2006 for some $673-million.
