U.K. Police Arrest 8 in Probe of Syria Charity Funds
March 5, 2014
Authorities in Britain arrested eight men Tuesday on suspicion of diverting money donated to help humanitarian work in war-torn Syria to finance terrorism or organized crime, report the BBC and the Daily Mail.
The early-morning arrests in several locations across England related the seizure of cash in multiple currencies worth about $75,000 at the port of Dover on the English Channel shortly before Christmas 2012. Police said the money came from four U.K.-based charities raising money for food and medical treatment for Syrians.
