U.N. Short on Aid Money

July 19, 2006

Governments have donated just one-third of the $4.8-billion the United Nations has requested for humanitarian aid this year, reports the Associated Press.

Donors gave only 24 percent of the $503-million requested for Sudan, and just $17.5-million—or 15 percent—of the $119-million requested to help victims of drought in the Horn of Africa.

“We must do better in terms of providing adequate levels of predictable humanitarian funding for our appeals,” said Jan Egeland, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
