The United Way in California’s Orange County has cut funds to local Boy Scouts, Red Cross, and Salvation Army chapters, and other nonprofit groups, as part of a new approach to distributing money, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The United Way this year instituted a new policy that requires charities requesting money to submit applications that pinpoint how they will meet specific needs and produce measurable results that make a difference to their region.
Charities not chosen to receive new money from the local United Way were notified this week by the organization, but some said the news came as a shock.
Officials from the Orange County United Way said charities that have received money in the past were told in October about the new approach to distributing funds.
