UPDATE: LOBBYIST’S DONATIONS

January 6, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The U.S. Family Network, a defunct nonprofit group founded by U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, was subpoenaed by Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle for records of a $500,000 donation from the National Republican Congressional Committee, reports the Associated Press. The organization was accused of receiving money from clients of the Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is at the center of a federal investigation. Mr. DeLay, a former House majority leader, has denied any connection between the donation and his political activities.

As the scandal surrounding Mr. Abramoff continues in Washington, charities around the nation are receiving a windfall of contributions from lawmakers desperate to unload tainted money, The New York Times reports. Political donations from Mr. Abramoff are primarily going to organizations benefiting Native Americans, since Indian tribes made up most of the lobbyist’s clientele.
