U.S. Charity Aid for Israeli Settlers Comes Under Scrutiny

November 7, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

A former Clinton administration official and avowed Zionist wants the U.S. to block tax-exempt donations to groups funding Israeli settlers in the West Bank, according to the Jewish Daily Forward. Marc Ginsberg says the American government shouldn’t award tax breaks for activity the Isreali government itself deems illegal. Mr. Ginsberg supports a two-state solution and believes such intervention by the U.S. government could help speed the peace process.

Mr. Ginsberg’s call, however, has gone largely unheeded, even by Jewish groups that typically oppose Israeli settlement. The lobbyist organization J Street said it supported a “thorough review” of all steps the U.S. can take to bring about a two-state solution but said it does not officially endorse Mr. Ginsberg’s proposal.
