Organization: Independent Sector

Summary: In 2016, the monetary value of volunteers to the charities they support was $24.14 an hour, an increase of 2.5 percent from the previous year, according to Independent Sector’s latest annual analysis of data from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Sixty-three million Americans contributed their time last year, the study said, giving 8 billion hours, or the equivalent of $193 billion in service.

Among the findings:

  • Delaware, where volunteers’ time was worth $23.20 an hour in 2016, saw the largest increase in value from 2015, up 8.6 percent.
  •  As in past surveys, the time given by volunteers in Washington, D.C., was valued the highest, at $39.17, up 1 percent from the previous year.
  •  Arkansas volunteers’ time was valued lowest, at $19.66, though that figure was up 2.7 percent from 2015.
  • Volunteers were most likely to give their time to religious organizations (34 percent), education or youth programs (28 percent), or social or community service groups (15 percent).
