Summary: In 2017, the value of a volunteer hour increased 55 cents to $24.69, a 2 percent rise from last year’s value of $24.14, according to an annual analysis by nonprofit membership association Independent Sector. The value of volunteers’ time has grown at a steady pace since 2002. The figures are based on hourly earnings data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Among other findings:
- 63 million Americans spend 8 billion hours volunteering, equal to $197.5 billion in service.
- Volunteer hours in the District of Columbia have the highest value at $39.45 an hour, followed by Massachusetts at $31.17. D.C. also had the highest-value volunteer hour in 2016, at $38.77.
- Mississippi has the lowest value, with volunteers’ time valued at $19.81 an hour, a 0.2 percent decrease since 2016.
