Strong advocacy is vital to nonprofits, but Anne Wallestad, chief executive of BoardSource, an organization that works to strengthen board leadership, says it’s an “underutilized tool.” Many trustees, she says, think advocacy is not part of their job.

On a recent visit to The Chronicle’s Washington, D.C., offices, Ms. Wallestad talked with editor Stacy Palmer about how board members can be better advocates for their organizations and how nonprofit leaders can help and encourage them.

Ms. Wallestad says nonprofit leaders should welcome trustees’ diverse perspectives in the board room.
