Vivian Tseng Will Lead Foundation for Child Development; Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies Taps New VP for Programs

Foundation for Child Development

Vivian Tseng will become its next president and CEO on November 1. Since 2017, she has been senior vice president of programs at the William T. Grant Foundation.

Tseng will follow Jacqueline Jones, who has departed after eight years at the $117 million foundation.


Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits

Laurie Liles, president and CEO of the Arizona Grantmakers Forum, will now serve as chief public-policy officer following the merger of the two Arizona philanthropy organizations.

Kristen Merrifield, CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, will lead the combined groups.

Harlem Educational Activities Fund

Michael Johnson, director of community life at Community Builders, has been appointed president and CEO.

He succeeds Fern Khan, who has served as interim president CEO since Ruth Rathblott departed in September 2021. Khan will now return to her role on its Board of Directors.

He has worked at the Fetzer Institute for the past decade, most recently as vice president of programs.

More New CEOs

Matthew Fasciano, chief operating officer at the Posse Foundation, has been tapped as president and CEO of Delivering Good.

Karin Buchholz, head of development at GLSEN, has been named global executive director of the Israel Tennis and Education Centers Foundation, based in New York.

Melissa Nelson has been named president and CEO of United Way of Florida. Previously she was president and CEO of United Way of St. Johns County, in Florida.

Marla Vickers will join Florida State University as vice president for university advancement and president of the FSU Foundation on October 1. Currently she is associate vice president of advancement at Emory University.

Other Notable Appointments

Susan Booth, artistic director of the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, will become artistic director of the Goodman Theatre in October. She will replace Robert Falls, who is stepping down after 35 years at the Chicago theater company.

Patrick Carpenter, director in institutional advancement at Holyoke Community College, has joined New England Public Media as senior director of development.

Mary Ellen Curran is now vice president for business and sports partnerships at the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Until July 2021, she was senior vice president for community relations at World Wrestling Entertainment.

Matt Gambino, director and general manager of CatholicPhilly.com, will now serve as managing director of programs, partners, and volunteers at Caring for Friends.

Haley Glover will now serve as director of UpSkill America, part of the Aspen Institute’s Economic Opportunities Program. Previously she worked at Amazon as senior program manager of career choice.

Oscar Gomez, founder and CEO of SoJoGo, has joined the Castellano Family Foundation as interim operations officer and diversity, equity, and inclusion strategist. In addition, Angie Briones, director of grant making and strategic initiatives since 2012, has departed the foundation in San Jose, Calif.

James Hurley, senior director of development and alumni relations at New York University, has been named assistant vice president for alumni relations at Rice University.

Cathy Livingston, a partner at the law firm of Jones Day where she advises nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations and their boards, will join the Open Society Foundations as general counsel on September 6.

Sam Mannetti, development consultant for film and television at Stage 32, has been appointed program manager at the Creative Coalition.

Amy Nakamoto has been promoted from senior vice president for corporate and community partnerships to general manager of social impact at Discovery Education. In addition, Jackie Smalls is returning to the education group as vice president of social-impact coalitions. Most recently she was chief program officer at Code.org and previously was director of professional learning and education partnerships at Discovery Education.

Bao Phi, director of events and awards at the Loft Literary Center, and Caroline Taiwo, director of economic opportunity at Springboard for the Arts, are joining the McKnight Foundation as program officers for arts and culture.

Dondi Leonidas Quintans, who was most recently director of marketing and communications at United Way of New York City, has joined Urban Resource Institute as senior director of marketing and communications.

Ivan Rosales, head of finance and operations at North Star Fund, has joined the Clara Lionel Foundation as chief financial and operating officer. The group was created by the singer Rihanna to raise money for climate justice and resilience in the Caribbean and United States.

Stephanie Schmidt, assistant treasurer and director of financial planning and analysis at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, has been hired as vice president of finance at the GroundTruth Project.

Jonathan Stenger has been appointed chief strategy officer at YouthBuild USA. He was previously vice president for external affairs and senior policy strategy adviser at the Osborne Association.

Michele Werner has been promoted from director of institutional partnerships to chief philanthropy officer at the National Service Office for Nurse-Family Partnership and Child First.
