Volunteers in Cambodia Among ‘Points of Light’

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Bush’s Daily Points of Light Award.

The Points of Light Foundation, a Washington charity, assists the president in making the choices and carrying out the award program. The recipients:

2379. Lynda Wyrick, Cary, N.C., who volunteers with Urban Ministries of Raleigh to help families and individuals in crisis situations obtain food and medicine and maintain their housing.

2380. Stand Up for Kids-North County Chapter, Oceanside, Calif., whose volunteers provide counseling, food, clothing, and hygiene and first-aid products to homeless youths.


2381. Youthanasia Foundation, Harvey, La., which runs several programs for youths in the metropolitan New Orleans area that help reduce illiteracy, teenage pregnancy, and violence, and which organizes high-school students to volunteer in their communities.

2382. Ed Londagin, Edmond, Okla., the owner of a hair salon who supports Putnam City Care-Share, which provides clothing, shoes, and toys to underprivileged children and their families.

2383. Ted and Sou Olbrich, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, missionaries who founded Foursquare Children of Promise, a nongovernmental group that runs approximately 50 small orphanages that collectively have cared for more than 2,000 orphans and abandoned children.

2384. Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Southwest Florida, Fort Myers, an organization whose volunteers provide transportation, shopping, home-repair, and other services to local elderly people.

2385. Trigeminal Neuralgia Association Support Leaders, Gainesville, Fla., an organization for people with this nerve disorder and their families. The association helps patients with chronic pain, educates health-care practitioners about the disease, and encourages related medical research.


2386. Warm Blankets Orphan Care International, Rolling Meadows, Ill., a group that works with churches, corporations, organizations, and individuals to improve the lives of orphans in underdeveloped countries.

2387. Helen Adams, New Bern, N.C., a teacher who has volunteered for many nonprofit groups in the New Bern area, including serving as a tutor and a hospice volunteer.

2388. Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Wayne, N.J., many of whose employees volunteer one day each month at local schools through a program organized by the Volunteer Center of Passaic County.

2389. John Betterton and John Berryhill, Roxboro, N.C., who purchased a recently closed local school building where they had worked and converted it into a charter school that they now direct.

2390. KFMB-TV, San Diego, a local station that has donated production services and free airtime to an advertising campaign for Volunteer San Diego. The station’s public-service announcements and news stories highlight the community-outreach efforts of local companies and educate viewers about volunteer opportunities.
