Wal-Mart donated $272.9-million to charity in 2006, a 10-percent increase from 2005, reports the Associated Press.
Wal-Mart gave more in cash in 2005 than any of the other big companies The Chronicle of Philanthropy surveyed last year in its annual study of corporate giving.
The 10-percent increase in charity in 2006 outpaced the company’s 7 percent increase in profits, which reached $12.2-billion. The 4,000 local Wal-Marts and Sam’s Clubs, a subsidiary of Wal-Mart, generally choose the recipients of the gifts.
