Warren Buffett’s Philanthropy: a Year’s Worth of Foundation Grants

Warren Buffett’s philanthropy, the Buffett Foundation, awarded nearly $10-million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1997, according to its informational tax return filed with the Internal Revenue Service. Following are the grants the foundation listed on that return:

Arts and culture. $5,000 each to San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Symphony.

Children and youths. $370,400 to Boys & Girls Club of Omaha, and $5,000 to Caring for Children (San Francisco).

Education. $10,000 each to 15 teachers as part of the Alice Buffett Outstanding Teacher Awards, and $1,000 to Alice Deal Junior High School PTA (Washington).

Health. $422,207 to Magee Women’s Hospital (Pittsburgh); $54,000 to U. of Colorado Health Sciences Center (Denver); and $10,000 to James Redford Institute (Los Angeles).


Higher education. $200,000 each to U. of California at San Francisco and UMCC Wesley House (Omaha), and $70,000 to U. of California at Berkeley.

Media. $5,000 to the public-broadcasting station KQED (San Francisco).

Public policy. $150,000 to State of the World Forum (San Francisco), and $50,000 each to the Atlantic Council of the United States (Washington) and the Campaign Reform Project (Mount Kisco, N.Y.).

Religion. $50,000 to Glide Memorial Church (San Francisco), and $5,000 to Salem Baptist Church (Omaha).
