Warren Buffett’s Sister Seeks Volunteers to Help Decide Where to Give Money

Doris Buffett is seeking volunteers in the Greater Boston area to help her wade through a backlog of letters to her brother, investor Warren Buffett, from people seeking financial help, reports the Boston Globe.

Over the past decade, Mr. Buffett, the chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway, has received at least 22,000 letters from people asking for assistance paying for health care, mortgages, utility bills, or other expenses. He forwards those letters to his sister, who decides where the money should go. During that time, they have given away more than $12 million in response. The gifts — which average $4,800 — are made through Doris Buffett’s Sunshine Lady Foundation.

Ms. Buffett, 88, said that she and the volunteers will be “sort of limitless” in terms of the amount of money they can give away, as Mr. Buffett will keep supplying more funds as needed. Mr. Buffett’s estimated worth is $66 billion.

Ms. Buffett moved to Boston in October from Fredericksburg, Va. She previously had about a dozen volunteers helping her wade through solicitations, but that number has dwindled over the years, according to the Globe.
