Web Site Catalogues Rules for Gift Annuities

May 7, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

A free data base of state regulations governing charitable gift annuities is now available on line.

The “Planned Giving Resources” World-Wide Web site is administered by James B. Potter, a planned-giving consultant in Alexandria, Va. Visitors can click on a state to check what rules apply for gift annuities in that jurisdiction. The site also has a list of sources in each state that can provide more information.

Gift annuities allow donors to contribute cash, securities, property, or other assets to a charity in exchange for fixed payments that are dependent on the age of the donor.

Mr. Potter says that the Internet is an ideal medium to provide the information to people because the rules governing gift annuities are constantly in flux. “It keeps changing so fast that even when I mail things out it’s not accurate,” he says.
