April 26, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Michael Milken made a name for himself on Wall Street, and he is increasingly doing so in the philanthropic world, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The Milken Institute Global Conference began in 1998 and has drawn numerous members of the rich and powerful — including Ted Turner, T. Boone Pickens, and Al Gore — as well as academics and celebrities.

Dubbed “Davos West,” after the World Economic Forum that takes place annually in Davos, Switzerland, the conference has an agenda, created by Mr. Milken, with topics ranging from global warming to the future of American education to celebrity philanthropy.

Mr. Milken and his family have given more than $1-billion to causes related to medical research and education.
