What Have Charities Accomplished In Afghanistan?

April 22, 2008 | Read Time: 1 minute

While international aid groups have poured into Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban, they have done little to help the country fight poverty, promote education, or feed the hungry, according to an opinion article by the South Asian News Agency that appears in the Pakistan Times.

“A number of foreign aid agencies are delivering assistance to the Afghan people to help them rebuild their shattered country but the result cannot be seen on the ground. In some cases there are too many different groups all trying to do the same thing — and are the billions of dollars pouring into the country being well spent?” the article asks.

The article says there is a growing resentment towards foreigners, including charity workers, and they are often seen living a relatively luxurious lifestyle.

What do you think? How can charities working in Afghanistan connect better with the local population?
