When Aaron Hurst created the Taproot Foundation a decade ago, the New York organization was seen by many observers as a spunky startup.
Today the organization, which links skilled professionals with charities that need them as volunteers, has graduated from a fledgling upstart to become a more established presence—a change that means the group needs different approaches to its work.
Mr. Hurst describes how that new mind-set affects the charity’s operations and offers advice to other charities that are going through a similar transition.
