When Phil Henderson joined the Surdna Foundation as its president seven years ago, he led the nearly 100-year-old family foundation through an introspective process of defining its values and then reshaping its programs with a view far into the future.
A big part of the foundation’s giving philosophy is the notion that “social change requires a thousand actions, of which Surdna will be part of only a handful,” says Mr. Henderson. Effective philanthropy is about working toward a long-term goal, he says, even if change is barely noticeable in the first few years.
In this episode of Making Change, listen to Mr. Henderson describe his foundation’s philosophy on consistent values and the professional and personal experiences that led him to believe that philanthropy is “a business that takes a long time.”
