Wisc. Insurance Company Gives $20 Million for Data Science Institute (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
American Family Insurance
$20 million to the University of Wisconsin at Madison to endow an institute for data science and to advance data-science research in such fields as artificial intelligence, genetics, drug development, material science, and business.
Sunderland Foundation
$15 million to Baylor University for its capital campaign to renovate and restore the Tidwell Bible Building.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$14 million to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for two research studies that will examine the risks of pregnancy, labor, and delivery and aim to make childbirth safer in the world’s poorest countries.
Helen Diller Foundation
$5 million to the University of California at Berkeley to endow a faculty chair in Israel studies.
Irvine Foundation
$5 million to the College Futures Foundation to help low-income workers complete their college degrees or postsecondary certificates and secure higher-paying jobs in California.
Duke Endowment
$4 million to Duke University to recruit up to six faculty scholars with expertise in African, Asian-American, and Latinx studies for the university’s Trinity College.
HCA Houston Healthcare
$3.5 million to the University of Houston’s College of Nursing to hire more adjunct and full-time faculty members, develop interactive modules to enhance its clinical training, and endow a professorship in its bachelor’s degree program in nursing.
New York Life Foundation
$3 million over three years to BellXcel to expand its summer and after-school learning programs for 12,000 middle-school students in the United States.
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
$1.5 million to the International African American Museum to help build this new museum in Charleston, S.C., and endow its chief curatorial position.
ServiceNow
$1.5 million to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties to address hunger and food insecurity that affect college students in Santa Clara County, Calif.
Walt Disney Company
$1 million to the Starlight Children’s Foundation to support care of children with critical illnesses, in honor of its new blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. The company also gave $4 million worth of Avengers toys and merchandise that the charity will distribute to children’s hospitals nationwide.
New Grant Opportunity
Gilead Sciences is offering grants worth up to $25,000 each to develop HIV/AIDS-awareness campaigns in the Deep South through its Southerners Promoting Awareness, Resources, and Knowledge (Spark!) grant program. Community organizations must be located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Texas. Applications are due June 30.
