Wisc. Pediatric Cancer Groups Collect $25 Million for Research (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer
$25 million pledge to the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to accelerate research in pediatric cancer and blood disorders.
Peter Kiewit Sons
$20 million pledge to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to build a new engineering facility, which will be named Kiewit Hall and will house the university’s construction-management programs. It is expected to open in 2022.
Google.org
$10 million pledge to Google for Small Business to give access to training and financing for low-income and minority entrepreneurs and help them start new companies.
Sentara Healthcare
$10 million pledge to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation for a partnership to address social determinants of health in poor communities across Virginia. The health-care company will also issue $40 million in loan guarantees through the effort.
Leona M. & Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust
$7.6 million to University of Florida Health and Stanford University to expand Project ECHO to 20 health-care centers in Florida. Of the total, the UF Diabetes Institute is receiving $3.3 million.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$5 million to the Africa Center for its capital campaign and to further develop its policy programs.
Houston Tamil Studies Chair
$2 million to the University of Houston to establish a chair in Tamil studies chair. This nonprofit group was founded last year to bolster the study of Tamil culture and language and create a forum for the growing population of Tamil-Americans in the United States.
Strada Education Network
$1.5 million to the American Council on Education for its Learner Success Lab, which seeks to increase the effectiveness of postsecondary institutions in teaching in-demand skills that are valuable in their graduates’ careers.
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
$1.1 million to the University of Michigan to support High Stakes Art, a project to enhance exhibitions and programs at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.
New Grant Opportunity
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry for grants from its new Culture, Equity, and the Arts grant-making program. Arts organizations with annual budgets of $2 million or more are eligible for grants to expand audiences at symphonies, operas, ballets, theaters, and museums in Chicago. Letters of inquiry are due December 31.
