With New Symbol, Israel Joins Red Cross

January 18, 2007

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent organization unveiled a new symbol this week that enables Israel to join the charity, reports the Reuters news agency.

The charity says a red “crystal” or diamond-shaped symbol on a white background can now be used to provide protection to the organization’s relief workers in conflict areas. Israel had declined to use the charity’s red cross or crescent symbols because of their association with Christianity and Islam, the news agency reports.

To join, Israel acknowledged the Palestinian Red Crescent as the international relief agency in the occupied territory.
