Women’s Giving Patterns

A Plan of One’s Own: a Woman’s Guide to Philanthropy asserts that women today control more wealth — whether individual, family, shared, or inherited — than ever before, and that their giving patterns differ from men’s as a result of social factors. Research by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute has found that, while women have the same motivations for giving as men do, including altruism and gratitude, female donors “bring a new voice to philanthropic giving, one that is based on partnership and engagement.” This publication discusses women’s giving patterns, such as their tendency to work with others as part of a larger effort and their desire to avoid duplication and competition. The guide also offers information and advice for women about giving options, including direct gifts, corporate-giving programs or foundations, giving circles, venture philanthropy, and volunteering.
