‘Worst Charities’ News Outlets Launch Online Watchdog Tool

January 28, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Tampa Bay Times and the Center for Investigative Reporting, which shook up the nonprofit world last year with their “America’s Worst Charities” series, have built an online tool that, for the first time, aggregates multiple charity watchdog groups’ reviews and ratings, the Florida newspaper reports.

The Times says Charity Checker, introduced last week, was inspired by the investigative series, which ranked 50 nonprofits as the country’s worst based on the proportion of their revenue that went to professional fundraisers. Users can search for nonprofits by name or type and check indicators from the Better Business Bureau, Guidestar, GreatNonprofits.org, and Charity Navigator.
