‘Worth’: America’s Top Donors, Charities

December 12, 2002 | Read Time: 1 minute

The financial magazine Worth has published its second annual list of what it calls the nation’s 100 best charities, in an issue that also includes profiles of 25 generous young Americans (December).

Worth‘s listing of the nation’s best charitable organizations is based on interviews with experts in the fields of health, human services, international relief and development, education, the arts, and the environment.

In selecting the charities, the magazine asked experts to assess the impact that organizations have had on their fields of endeavor. It also reviewed the past three years of informational tax returns from each charity and computed the percentage of donations each group spent on charitable programs.

The organizations that made the list were not ranked, but classified by their field. About half are new to the list this year, the magazine says.

As part of the 30-page section on philanthropy, Worth also compiled a list of what it calls the most generous Americans under age 45.

In addition to looking at who gives the most money, the magazine also based its selections on how frequently candidates volunteer and how compassionate they are toward their charitable endeavors. The magazine names Curt Schilling, 36, a professional baseball player who has helped raise $3-million to fight Lou Gehrig’s disease, philanthropist of the year.
