For the second year in a row, George Soros tops Worth magazine’s (April) list of the 100 Americans who have given the most in their lifetimes. Mr. Soros has given $2.65-billion in his lifetime, the magazine says.
The magazine’s ranking counts all gifts made through 1999, so Bill and Melinda Gates, who now have more than $21-billion in their foundation, were credited with lifetime gifts of only $846-million and were ranked as No. 4. No. 2 was Walter H. Annenberg; No. 3 was William R. Hewlett.
“In the midst of a second gilded age,” Worth says, “a new breed of titanic philanthropists is emerging.”
The new philanthropists, the magazine says, have a giving style much like Rockefeller and Carnegie. They’re not “giving back” out of gratitude, the magazine says; instead, they “give forward” — meaning they are willing to take risks in their philanthropic grants.
