TAX WATCH

By Elizabeth Schwinn

  • A national animal-rights charity says the Internal Revenue Service has completed its audit of the organization and found no signs of problems. Jeffrey S. Kerr, PETA’s general counsel, said the IRS “looked at all aspects of our operations, and we’re fine.” The group was previously audited in the early 1990s.
  • The IRS is auditing a New Hampshire boarding school that has been criticized for its financial practices, the school has confirmed. Two years ago, St. Paul’s School, in Concord, decided to reduce the compensation of its rector and vice rector after a review by the New Hampshire attorney general. In 2004, the rector, Craig B. Anderson, received $502,394 in compensation and benefits, including deferred compensation, and the vice rector, Sharon D. Hennessy, received $321,269 in compensation and benefits. The IRS, as is its practice, declined to comment on the matter.
