W.Va. Voters OK Tax Break for Boy Scouts-Owned Property

The Boy Scouts of America will be able to rent out its Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia for commercial events without losing its tax exemption under a state constitutional amendment approved by voters Tuesday, reports the Associated Press. The national youth organization could have faced up to $5-million a year in property taxes without the amendment, which won 62 percent voter support.
The Boy Scouts plans to lease facilities at the Bechtel complex for concerts and sporting events to raise money for its operations. To date the reserve in Fayette County, W.Va., has been used only for scouting events, including the national Boy Scout Jamboree held every four years.
