$100 Million Pledged for Brain Studies

The science-focused Kavli Foundation and seven institutions of higher education are teaming on a $100-million effort to advance research into traumatic injury and brain diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, Agence France-Presse reports. Half of the money will come from the foundation, launched in 2000 by the late physicist and industrialist Fred Kavli, and half from the participating universities.
A majority of the funds will be used to establish new neuroscience centers at Johns Hopkins University, the Rockefeller University, and the University of California at San Francisco, which will become part of an international network of Kavli-funded research centers. The foundation’s share includes $40 million it already pledged to a $300-million, White House-led brain-research effort that President Obama launched in 2013.
