A Company’s Leader Sets the Tone of Giving

May 21, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

To the Editor:

There is a perennial organizational mantra about the leader in a group setting the tone through his or her actions. In the case of Real Networks (“A Clearinghouse of Causes: WebActive Reflects Founder’s Progressive Vision,” April 9), Rob Glaser’s attitudes are definitely reflected in team members’ priorities and actions.

Our community health clinic was recently the recipient of a substantial cash gift, which consisted of several individuals’ checks, together with a company gift. Upon calling to find out more (the gifts were unsolicited), I was told that employees periodically pool their donations, then vote on recipient charities as nominated by members of the group.

In the case of Real Networks, members of the team aren’t waiting for the profits to roll in: They are acting now. Our thanks to Mr. Glaser and his team.
