An At-Risk Element of Public Radio

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:

Vince Stehle’s article “All Grant Makers Have a Big Stake in Preserving Local Public Radio Stations” (Opinion, August 31) eloquently makes an important case.

Another segment of the public-radio world is equally at risk and in need of support — the independent producer.

Somewhat invisible to listeners, independent producers contribute some of the most compelling programming delivered over public airwaves.

The most prestigious awards honoring creativity and excellence in radio regularly go to independents.

Ironically, despite the quality of their contribution, independents struggle daily to survive: They have limited access to professional-development support, training, and funds. The networks, stations, and programmers compensate them poorly.

It is critical that the unique art of independent radio production be more deeply supported. We cannot allow this career choice to become a lost art in our changing society. Independents are the pool from which diverse voices emerge.
