Let the New Age of Accountability Begin

To the Editor:
The Internal Revenue Service’s public-disclosure rules had a healthy period for review and public comment regarding the disclosure of informational tax returns, called Forms 990, to the public. Now, as the implementation is about to begin, some want amendments (“I.R.S. Disclosure Rule Should Be Amended,” Letters to the Editor, May 20).
I say, Too late.
Let’s get on with the age of non-profit public accountability of I.R.S. filings for the betterment of the independent sector. Whether through hard copy or electronic disclosure, make the 990 tax-exempt filing available to the public based on the requested needs of the contributor.
