Opinion: Lawmaker Says New Charity Rules Needed

Nonprofit groups must earn their tax-exempt status, and Congress should act to tighten the rules and regulations governing charities in order to increase Americans’ confidence in them, writes Sen. Charles Grassley, Republican of Iowa and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, in The Hill.
Mr. Grassley outlines certain areas of concern, including excessive compensation, inappropriate political activity, lack of financial transparency and accountability to donors, and nonprofit hospitals that don’t provide adequate charity care.
