OPINION: RED CROSS ADVERTISEMENT

January 17, 2006

The American Red Cross’ new public-service announcement asking people to donate blood is “a bit insidious” because it suggests that giving blood is more worthwhile than advocacy or other efforts to improve the world, writes Seth Stevenson in Slate. Donating blood may save individual lives, he says, but it won’t make the planet a better place, as have some advocacy efforts. And not even blood donations are free from politics, he writes, as some students have protested the Red Cross for classifying gay men as a “high risk” group prohibited from donating.
