OPINION: RED CROSS

March 14, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Red Cross could have avoided a lot of trouble if it had asked Congress to change the organization’s board structure, rather than wait for lawmakers to suggest changes,
says an editorial in The Washington Post. The newspaper urged Sen. Charles E. Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, which is investigating the governance of the Red Cross, and the charity, to find ways to work together more closely. “Mr. Grassley has made his point, and the Red Cross has gotten the message. Both should tone down their rhetoric and work together to ensure that the organization remains the admired ‘army of volunteers’ it has always been,” writes the paper.
