Professor Nominated to Lead AmeriCorps

President Bush has announced plans to nominate Leslie Lenkowsky to be C.E.O. of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that administers AmeriCorps and other volunteer programs.

He currently serves as a member of the board of the corporation.

Mr. Lenkowsky, whose nomination must be approved by the Senate, said he would work to “expand opportunities for Americans to serve and help those charities that the president is seeking to assist through his faith-based and community initiatives.”

The corporation receives $766-million annually in federal support.

A Republican who was appointed to the corporation’s board by President Clinton in 1994, Mr. Lenkowsky, 55, now serves as professor of philanthropic studies and public policy at Indiana UniversityPurdue University’s Center on Philanthropy, in Indianapolis. He also is a contributor to The Chronicle of Philanthropy‘s opinion pages.


Previously, Mr. Lenkowsky served as president of the Hudson Institute, a public-policy think tank in Indianapolis. He also was president of the Institute for Educational Affairs, deputy director of the United States Information Agency, and a director of research at the Smith Richardson Foundation.

He is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and received a Ph.D. in philanthropic studies and public policy from Harvard University.
