Simon’s Lead Is One Worth Following

October 8, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

To the Editor:

There are many remarkable aspects of the excellent cover story (“Giving Away a Personal Treasury,” June 18) about William Simon’s philosophy and philanthropy, and their interrelation.

His revelation of gifts of $100,000 or more to 73 organizations demonstrated the wide range of his interests and should certainly inspire others to “go public.”

Mr. Simon’s willingness to reveal the problems he had with two or three of his major donees is something few others would do. The list of his benefactions includes many traditional organizations but also indicates bold support for lesser-known causes in which he obviously believes fervently.

Let’s hope others will follow his lead in the giving of his money and himself.
