Stewardship of Charitable Donations Isn’t So Simple

To the Editor:

I was very disappointed to read Peter Frumkin’s opinion column on stewardship issues and the found Michelangelo drawing at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (“Museum’s $10-Million Lesson: Stewardship Matters,” August 8).

Mr. Frumkin implied that the museum was not properly stewarding its resources. I see it differently, and probably more accurately: human error.

Seems to me that Mr. Frumkin has erred in just the same way the purchaser of the $60 box of drawings did in 1942: He’s mistaking something for what it’s not.

I was very disappointed to read this very “fluffy” and misdirected article.
