Women lag behind in leadership jobs

To the Editor:
Your article “Pay for Leaders at Biggest Charities Rises 6.2%, Chronicle Survey Finds” (September 21) substantiated my ongoing observation that, at big meetings, the person sitting at the head of the table is almost always a guy, and yes, he is making the most money.
A brief count of the president or executive director listed for each organization included in your survey reveals that at foundations, 20 percent are women, and of the nonprofit groups surveyed, 15 percent of the highest paid are female.
Additionally 14 percent of those making more than the chief executive are women, and just 8 percent of the people receiving $100,000 or more in fringe benefits are women.
In an economic sector where the worker bees are predominantly women, it’s time to start raising some more queens.
