We’re Asking You to Register. Here’s Why.

September 16, 2020 | Read Time: 4 minutes

For more than three decades, our journalists have delivered news and analysis that you won’t find anywhere else. Because of our reputation as the most trusted news source in philanthropy, nonprofit professionals, foundation executives, board members, and many others rely on us for indispensable information and practical advice they need to change the world.

Today we’re announcing some big changes that will enable you to sample the best of our journalism for free. Your support will help us build on our success as the best source of in-depth reporting and insights and will help us find new ways to serve you better. We hope you’ll join us as we enter this new chapter.

Sample the best of our journalism before subscribing.

Our journalism has an impact — but only if readers like you have access to it. That’s why we’re switching to a new metered-paywall model for our website. We will no longer distinguish between free and premium articles; instead, we are asking you to create an account with us to gain access to any of our articles. (Those of you who already have accounts can simply sign in to start reading.)

Account registration is free and will allow you to read a certain number of articles without paying. When you’ve reached your limit, we’ll ask you to subscribe to read more. This metered approach makes it possible for more people to read our journalism. We hope this prompts our readers to subscribe to enjoy unlimited access to everything we publish.

During this free and simple registration, we’ll ask you to share some basic information about yourself so we can customize your experience and deliver more meaningful content and insights to you. You may view our privacy policy for a full explanation of our data use and your options.

A metered paywall will:

  • Allow our best journalism to reach more readers.
  • Help us understand Chronicle readers and their needs better.
  • Deliver more of the content you need to do your job, succeed in your career, and serve your organization well.

I invite you to send me your thoughts and questions at editormail@philanthropy.com.

Warm regards,

Andrew Simon

FAQ

Why the change?

We’re making this change so more people can read our best work and ultimately subscribe to help provide vital support for our journalism.

You’ll be able to sample anything on our site — award-winning news coverage, agenda-setting opinion essays, advice to help you advance in your career, our daily and weekly newsletters, and more. When you reach your limit of free content, we’ll ask you to subscribe.

How will registration work?

If you already have a philanthropy.com account, simply sign in and start reading.

If you do not already have an account, you’ll be asked to register. Once you do so, we will send you an email to confirm your account. Just click on the link, and you will immediately have access.

What happens once I create my account?

When you register, we’ll ask you three questions to help us understand your interests and needs. We’ll use that information to recommend articles and other content we think you’ll find helpful and provide relevant job alerts, among other things.

What will you do with the information I share with the Chronicle?

That information will help us personalize your experience, manage and improve our services for you, and understand our audience. Based on the preferences you choose, we will send you emailed newsletters, notifications about your account, and updates or special offers from select partners. You can adjust your email preferences at any time.

After I create an account, how many articles will I be able to read for free?

Some news sites offer readers a specific number of stories that they can read for free. Our model is dynamic. We’ll consider a number of factors — such as who you are, how you read us, and what you’ve read in the past — before asking you to subscribe.

I can’t afford to buy a subscription. What are my options?

We know that buying a subscription is a commitment. But your financial support is what makes it possible for us to bring you the best journalism about the nonprofit world.

Many organizations purchase access to philanthropy.com for their employees through an organizational site license. Check with your COO or director to see if you have site-license access. If your organization does not, suggest that your director contact our site license support team at 800-728-2819.

I’m already an individual subscriber. What do these changes mean for me?

Nothing at all. If you’re already a subscriber but do not have a philanthropy.com account, you can call our customer-support team at 571-540-8070 or email us at cophelp@philanthropy.com to link your subscription to your account.

If you already have an account, just sign in to start reading.
