Since its founding in 1998, the Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management has supported the development of over 26,000 leaders worldwide. By addressing the sector’s most pressing challenges and continually adapting to change, the Center has become a vital resource for nonprofit professionals dedicated to making a lasting impact.

A Legacy of Impactful Leadership

For more than 25 years, the Center has equipped nonprofit professionals with the skills and confidence to strengthen their organizations and achieve their missions. From small community projects to global initiatives, the Center’s participants are proof of its powerful influence, driving innovation and positive outcomes across the nonprofit world.

“Our programs are designed for busy nonprofit professionals who need to efficiently build their leadership toolkit and may not have the time or resources to dedicate to a multi-year degree program,” says Executive Director Liz Livingston Howard. “Whether you’re an executive director, board member, or up-and-coming leader, we have a program that meets your needs.”

The Center’s impact is evident in countless success stories. Leaders such as Dr. Marius E. Adimmadu, President of the African Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis, have significantly strengthened their organizations through the Center’s programs.

“The Northwestern Kellogg Nonprofit Management Program is unique and essentially designed to scale up knowledge with a multi-disciplinary perspective,” says Adimmadu. “The program provides participants with the practical tools necessary for advancing management as a special discipline in a serene, knowledge-based, and content-driven environment. The interactions among participants and professors, the networking, and the post-program relationship with program managers and lecturers are innovative, setting a new standard for excellence and impactful leadership.”

Innovating for Today and Tomorrow

To keep pace with the rapidly evolving nonprofit sector, the Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management continually adapts its programs to meet emerging needs. Embracing innovation and forward-thinking approaches, the Center offers programs that equip leaders to tackle today’s challenges while preparing for the opportunities of tomorrow.

Nonprofit Management Essentials (NME) exemplifies the Center’s commitment to innovation. Developed in partnership with The Allstate Foundation, this free, online, on-demand program delivers high-quality education to organizations that might lack access to traditional professional development resources. NME equips nonprofit leaders with essential skills, empowering them to maximize their impact despite resource constraints.

Recognizing the growing need for tailored learning experiences, the Center has also expanded its custom programs. These offerings address the specific needs of individual organizations, enabling teams to learn and grow together within a focused and cohesive framework.

“Custom programs are increasingly recognized as invaluable,” notes Jennifer Paul, Director, Nonprofit Executive Programs. “They allow organizations to build a unified leadership culture, aligning their strategies and goals through shared experiences.”

Looking ahead, the Center plans to launch a series of longer-format programs within its open enrollment offerings in 2025. These immersive experiences will foster deeper learning, encourage robust peer interaction, and support sustained leadership development. By extending program durations, the Center aims to provide leaders with comprehensive tools and insights that can be directly applied to create meaningful organizational advancements.

Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusivity

Accessibility lies at the heart of the Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management’s mission. Understanding that financial barriers should not impede professional growth, the Center offers scholarships to ensure leaders from all backgrounds can benefit from its programs.

“Leaders across the nonprofit sector — regardless of mission, discipline, or budget size — benefit from executive education,” says Senior Associate Dean of Executive Programs Tom O’Toole. “It fosters personal development, enhances organizational outcomes, and drives social impact in their communities.”

To further extend its reach, the Center provides a diverse range of learning formats, including in-person sessions, live virtual programming, and online courses. This flexibility accommodates various schedules and locations, enabling more nonprofit leaders to access the Center’s resources and expertise.

Adapting to an Evolving Landscape

In a sector characterized by constant change, the Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management remains proactive and responsive. By actively gathering participant feedback and staying attuned to emerging trends, the Center continuously refines its programs to address the current and future needs of nonprofit leaders.

There’s a growing recognition in the sector of the need for robust leadership development. Nonprofits understand that cultivating a pipeline of leaders is crucial for long-term sustainability and growth. The Center’s programs are designed to help leaders build this pipeline, ensuring that their organizations are well equipped for the future.

The surge in demand for custom programs highlights this adaptive approach. Nonprofit organizations increasingly seek cohesive, high-quality learning experiences that strengthen leadership teams and unify strategic visions. By offering these tailored programs, the Center enables organizations to align their leadership strategies effectively and foster consistent, mission-driven progress.

“Over the past decade, we’ve partnered with the Center for Nonprofit Management each summer to host a three-day Leadership Academy for independent school leaders,” says Mary Menacho, Executive Director of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). “Even years later, these leaders credit the Academy with shaping their leadership through practical tools and skills they’ve applied in their schools. The relationships they build — with fellow participants, professors, and program managers — create lasting impacts, setting a benchmark for excellence in leadership development.”

A Vision for the Future

As the Center looks to the future, its dedication to empowering nonprofit leaders remains steadfast. Through continuous innovation, strategic growth, and an adaptive mindset, the Center ensures its programs stay relevant and impactful for years to come.

“As one of the first centers dedicated to nonprofit executive education, we’ve spent over two decades creating outstanding educational experiences,” says Howard.

Brayden King, Senior Associate Dean for Strategy & Academics, adds, “The Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management exemplifies our commitment to blending academic rigor with real-world application. By equipping nonprofit leaders with the skills they need to succeed, we are fostering a generation of leaders capable of driving significant social change.”

Moving forward, the Center remains poised to continue leading the way in nonprofit executive education, offering tailored solutions that adapt to the sector’s shifting needs and ensuring that its programs stay at the forefront of nonprofit management education.
