Gifts Roundup: Pop Singer Bruno Mars Donates $1 Million for Victims of Flint Water Crisis

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by The Chronicle:
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates donated company stock valued at $4.6 billion to the foundation he leads with his wife, Melinda.
The foundation supports programs in global health and development and U.S. education, as well as policy and advocacy work in those areas. It has given out more than $36 billion in grants since the couple founded it in 2000.
Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation
Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg gave stock valued at $98 million to her donor-advised fund.
The money will be used to back a number of nonprofits, including two Ms. Sandberg started, LeanIn.org and OptionB.org.
Cleveland Clinic Florida
Jeff Levitetz donated $2 million through the Levitetz Family Foundation to the medical center’s orthopedic-surgery department, which will be named for him.
Mr. Levitetz founded Purity Wholesale Grocers, a nationwide distributor of grocery and other products. A former high school and collegiate wrestler, he is a longtime supporter of the sport, serving on the board of national governing body USA Wrestling and as team leader of the U.S. Greco-Roman squad that competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Anti-Defamation League
James and Kathryn Murdoch pledged $1 million to the organization in response to the outbreak of violence at a white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., on August 12, where white supremacists clashed with counterprotesters and a car attack left one woman dead and many others injured.
Mr. Murdoch is the chief executive of film and television company 21st Century Fox and the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch. In a written statement posted on the New York Times website, the younger Mr. Murdoch urged other 21st Century Fox employees to donate to the Anti-Defamation League as well.
Community Foundation of Greater Flint
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Bruno Mars gave $1 million to the foundation to help residents of Flint, Mich., who have been affected by the city’s water crisis.
Mr. Mars announced the gift during an August 12 performance at the Palace of Auburn Hills outside Detroit. He and his concert promoter, Live Nation, directed $1 million in proceeds from the show to the Flint foundation.
