NEW BOOKS

Be the Change: Change the World, Change Yourself, edited by Michelle Nunn, encourages readers to serve their communities — to beautify a neighborhood, tutor children, support their fellow citizens — and also help themselves. Ms. Nunn, a co-founder and chief executive officer of the Hands On Network, quotes Mahatma Gandhi in the title: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Hundreds of volunteers — along with well-known politicians, journalists, scientists, and athletes — describe their service experiences in nine sections, each focused on a different theme, such as “Selfish Reasons to Be Selfless,” “Citizenship and Political Action,” and “Overcoming Obstacles to Engagement.” Appendices include contact information for people interested in giving their time to charitable causes and tips for new volunteers.
