A Guide for Foundations That Want to Offer Loans, Other Investments to Charities
September 14, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute
Program-Related Investing: Skills and Strategies for New PRI Funders, by Neil Carlson, gives wary foundations a beginner’s guide to program-related investments, or those “made by foundations in support of charitable purposes, with the explicit understanding that those investments will earn below-market returns, adjusted for risk and mission.” The publication gathers suggestions from organizations that make such investments and those that have just started doing so. The guide offers tips on how to persuade reluctant boards to back the investments, as well as how to find good investing opportunities, and where to find useful resources online.
