Banking on Philanthropy: The Impact of Bank Mergers on Charitable Giving, by Becky Sherblom, reports on studies of seven national banks and their corporate philanthropy. The report, from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, finds that despite predictions to the contrary, the significant growth of banks since the 1980s has been accompanied by significantly more — and in some cases “exponentially” more — charitable giving. As bank companies have merged and grown to a national scale, their giving has changed in several ways: They are donating more money, looking at philanthropy as a central business strategy, increasing grant making in the South, and sometimes shifting the focus to national organizations instead of local groups.
